Q: Do you stream to the iPhone?
A: At this time, we do not support streaming specifically to the iPhone. We have a solution currently in development and are anticipating its upcoming release.
Q:
What is the Streaming Archive, how it was conceived and developed?
A: KEXP wanted to find a way to deliver all of
KEXP’s broadcast service in a format that would allow
listeners to hear any KEXP program when they wanted to hear it. Due to
the legal considerations surrounding the Digital Millennium Copyright
Act (1998) and other hot issues surrounding music on the Internet, KEXP
consulted with lawyers to develop and produce the archive within legal
boundaries. The University of Washington technical group developed all
of the Archive’s back-end structure, and the web design
company CursiveCode designed the user interface you see on our website.
Q:
What software is required to listen to the Streaming Archive?
A: There are two stream formats available: Real and
Windows Media. The required software is Real Player or Windows Media
Player (version 10 or higher) and a web browser (Firefox, Internet
Explorer, Safari, etc.). Because of the variable success of
Macintosh/Flip4Mac users when attempting to listen to the Windows Media
format we recommended Macintosh users listen to the Real format. It is
highly recommended that users keep their software up-to-date and clear
the browser’s cache regularly.
Q: Why is the Streaming
Archive only available in Real and Windows Media formats?
A: The technology was readily available for
developing the Streaming Archive in these formats. There is interest in
development a Streaming Archive in the mp3 format but the current
technology doesn’t support this functionality.
Q:
When are archive shows made available?
A: Programming on KEXP is recorded and posted
online as soon as the encoding and other technical work is completed.
New programming is online approximately every six hours, with some
variance. If you are trying to listen to something after this time
period and you suspect there may an error contact streaming support. In
the mean time, check out another stream. You might like it!
Q:
Why does the programming disappear from the archive after 14 days?
A: The Streaming Archive was developed in
accordance to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (1998) which has
limitations on the length of time music archives may be stored online.
Q: Why can’t I search for
a specific artist or a track?
A: This is a strict legal limitation that does not
allow users to search for specific artists, titles or albums according
to license agreements.
Q:
Why can't I see the song/artist information or the information never
updates?
A: The embedded player needed for this
functionality may not be fully compatible in all browsers hence some
song and artist information might not appear or update in certain
browsers.
Q:
Why can't I fast forward in the stream while listening?
A: This is a legal restriction surrounding the
definition of interactivity and this limits our ability to allow users
to move forward or backwards in the stream. There is current litigation
between the RIAA and several large webcasters that may determine a more
clear definition of interactivity. If/when the ruling is in webcasters'
favor, we may be able to offer this feature.
Q:
Why is there a clicking sound every ten seconds?
A: This is typically an issue for Windows users; to
disable this setting go to Control panel |Sounds and Multimedia then
set the sound for Windows Explorer/start navigation to none.
Q:
Why is it that when I changed streams the player didn’t pop
up?
A: The player will pop up once when it is initially
opened but will remain accessible in your system tray at the bottom of
your computer when you select a different stream.
Q: Why do I hear a “sorry,
not available” message when I tried to play selected audio?
A: The Streaming Archive automatically records and
encodes KEXP’s broadcast programming and places it in the
database online. For some reason the time period you requested did not
get recorded. You might try another format or a different time or
contact streaming support regarding the missing content. Nevertheless,
if you see the song info in the player but are still receiving the
audio error message contact streaming support.
Q:
Why is song and audio not always displayed in sync on the player?
A: The song information is pulled from the
real-time play list and there could be several reasons why the song you
are hearing may be different from what is displaying. All songs played
are time-stamped by the DJ while they are live on the air. These time
stamps are quite accurate for CDs, but vinyl times are manually entered
to the nearest minute, and occasionally when DJs mix live there may be
two songs playing simultaneously. In addition, there is also a slight
delay on your player’s refresh.
Q:
Why can’t I see all of the comments in the player?
A: In order to keep our player small and less
intrusive on your computer screen, the amount of space for comments
from the DJs is limited. In order to see all of the comments made from
the DJs visit the archived playlist for that show.
Q:
Why does time in the player slider not match the show?
A: If you chose a start time other than the
default, the slider time is relative to that. The individual show may
span multiple audio files and you may not be in the first file.
Q:
Why does the audio display 3:12 when I entered 3:15 as my start time?
A: The audio launches at the time you specify but
the time information displayed in the player reflects the start time of
the song.
Q:
Why does the audio start during a previous show then the show I
selected?
A: Usually clearing your history and cache in your
browser will remedy this issue. Unfortunately, Macintosh/Flip4Mac users
will experience this issue more frequently and is a known issue;
similar issues are noted on the Flip4Mac forums. Because of the
variable success of Macintosh/Flip4Mac users when attempting to listen
to the Windows Media format we recommended Macintosh users listen to
the Real format.
Q:
Why does the player launch but it doesn’t automatically start
playing the stream?
A: This issue crops up in specific browser
versions; simply hit the play button on the player and enjoy!
